One of the biggest players working in the Denver-Julesburg Basin, says it plans to drill more than 360 wells there in 2014. Anadarko Petroleum drilled 335 wells with 13 rigs in Colorado in Colorado, and the Texas based company said this week that it expects to invest between $8.1 billion and $8.5 billion around the world in 2014, with 60 percent of the money going to U.S. operations. Anadarko says it expects onshore production to rise by up to 7 percent, to about 625,000 barrels of oil (equivalent) per day.

The activity in the Wyoming side of the Niobrara Shale play continues to lag far behind the booming oil and gas activities in Colorado.

The company’s operations in the Niobrara, and specifically the prolific DJ Basin operations north of Denver, will be a key component of the expansion. Anadarko said its “Wattenberg Horizontal program,” referring to a part of the DJ Basin, “generates the strongest returns in Anadarko’s U.S. onshore portfolio.”

The company said it expects to see “significant growth” from its Colorado operations as it realizes the benefits from infrastructure expansions and a concentrated acreage position following its October 2013 swap of mineral rights acreage with Noble Energy Inc.
